Features:
Whether you live in a modern apartment, a renovated warehouse or a vintage cottage, whatever stove or oven you use - there's one appliance that's absolutely a necessity in every house: a range hood.
Without a range hood, whenever you are cooking, steam, heat and smoke created by your dishes will travel to all the corners of your house, making you uncomfortable. It's an all too familiar is a house without a range hood; you and your family will be blowing your nose, coughing and sneezing, nothing that's hygienic or desired.
Especially if you have an open floor plan, an open kitchen and family members lounging around the kitchen at all times, your children doing their homework at the dining table or your partner hanging around while you cook, you would want them to be as comfortable as possible during these precious family moments.
What you don't want is to drive your family away from all the smells and smoke of your cooking,
If you want to keep your family close while cooking, and if you don't want to sneeze, whizz and cough while cooking, and if you don't want smoke and odor from your cooking to reach the other rooms of your house, you need a hood over your range.
This is the only way that grease, heat, steam, smoke and odor from your cooking (and there will be more than you can handle on your own) to stay private to the area where you are actually doing the cooking.
But first, you need to understand what a range hood does, and how it can help you.
A kitchen range hood is a large appliance that hangs over your stove or cooking range, and has a high-powered fan inside. This fan sucks in all the steam, smoke, heat and even odor, directly from your cooking before they can spread around.
Most kitchen range hoods have the same working principles and the same mechanisms, and only differ in the smaller features. Everything sucked in by these fans are eventually let outside, through a hole in the wall or the ceiling, so that your kitchen and your entire house is kept clean.
There are more than one ways that a range hood can keep your kitchen and your home clean.
First of all, whenever you cook something, especially something spicy, your food releases a lot of strong smells and gasses into the air, most of which will make you cough and sneeze. These particles can even get inside your lungs when you inhale them, causing further and more serious health issues, including asthma and bronchitis.
When you have a hood installed over your kitchen range, it will instantly suck in all the intense smoke and steam from your food, leaving clear air behind. There will be no smoke in the house, no strong odor or aroma in the air, no toxic air filled with spices and other harmful particles, just clean and clear air in your kitchen. All the smoke and steam will be released outside the house, into the open.
Secondly, cooking also releases a lot of heat around the stove. Whatever you are cooking, if there's an open fire, it will create heat for all the people around the kitchen. Especially the person who is cooking faces the most heat, making them sweat, which is not something you want to experience when you are working with food.
Heat intensifies when you are boiling something or cooking soup, but a range hood can suck in all the heat created by your cooking/open fire, and keep your kitchen cool.
Third, with a cooking range hood, there won't be any smell of cooking in your home before you want them. While we all love the aroma of freshly baked bread, fried chicken or a cheesy pasta, no one quite like the intense aroma these foods create while being cooked.
Besides steam, heat and smoke, a kitchen range hood will also eliminate all fragrances and traces of cooking while your food is being prepared. When you have guests or company, they won't be bothered with the smell while you prepare your special recipes for them.
Finally, installing a range hood in your kitchen increases the value of your home manifold. If you are just constructing your new home, renovating your old-fashioned kitchen or building a new kitchen, installing a range hood over your stove is always a good idea.
If you have plans to rent out your home in the future or sell it to potential buyers, everyone is going to look for a range hood in the kitchen. Since most of these range hoods are durable and give a lifetime guarantee, installing them once in your kitchen will benefit your home in the long run.
So whether you are worried about your health, the overall environment of your home, or if you just want to keep your home clean and fresh while cooking, you are definitely going to need a range hood in your kitchen.
Whether you cook every day or rarely, every meal or occasionally, a kitchen range hood can keep your entire house, not just your kitchen, smoke-free, odorless and free from grease.
Most of the wall mount hoods for your kitchen ranges available in the market have the same characteristics and features. They basically work on the same mechanism and give you the same kind of services, with only a few small distinctions between them.
However, these are some of the important features that you need to look for in the model that you purchase for your kitchen.
All range hoods are sized to fit the standard kitchen ranges, stoves and ovens. In consistency with the popular kitchen appliances, range hoods are available in two sizes: 30-inch wide ones and 36-inch wide ones.
The range hood needs to cover the whole area above your kitchen stove or range, which means you need to buy a range hood that is equal to your kitchen stove/range. Anything larger or smaller will have a hard time fitting in.
If you buy one smaller than your kitchen range, the smoke, heat and steam from your cooking will escape from the sides, and damage your cabinets. A larger size will only mean you're unnecessarily taking up space reserved for your kitchen cabinets, which can be a big deal in a compact kitchen.
Models like the Chef Range Hood WM-639 and the Golden Vantage Wall Mount Range Hood comes in two sizes: 30" wide and 36" wide, but the other models described here only come in 30" wide range hoods, which is the standard measurement for kitchen ranges.
Likewise, all range hoods are manufactured to fit kitchens up to a height of 8-feet or 8.5-feet. The Cavaliere 30" Range Hood can fit a 9-feet high kitchen, even higher with separately purchased chimney extensions. The Chef Range Hood WM-639 can actually fit kitchens with a height of 10-feet, without the need of an extension, since this range hood is more fitted for commercial buildings and restaurants.
In general, kitchen range hoods come with chimney extensions to fit kitchens from 7.5' to 8.5', like the Cosmo 63175S 30-in Wall Mount Range Hood, the AKDY Wall Mount Range Hood or the Winflo New 30" Convertible Wall Mount.
This feature is almost unanimous in all kitchen range hoods! They are all made from stainless steel, such as the Cosmo 63175 30-Inch Wall-Mount Range Hood, the Chef Range Hood WM-639 and the Golden Vantage Wall Mount Range Hood.
On the other hand, the Perfetto Kitchen and Bath Range Hood and the Winflo New 30" Convertible Wall Moun t are manufactured with a combination of stainless steel and tempered glass. Having tempered glass in the design doesn't change the efficiency of the range hood in any way; it is more of a design factor than anything else for your kitchen.
This is one feature that might differ in all the range hoods available in the market. The more air flow a range hood has, the more powerful it is; a powerful range hood can completely suck up any kind of heat, steam, smoke, smell and airborne particles from your cooking the moment they are created, keeping your kitchen and your home as clean and fresh as possible.
With models such as the AKDY Wall Mount Range Hood, the Golden Vantage Wall Mount Range Hood and the Perfetto Kitchen and Bath Range Hood, you get 343 cu.ft. per minute air flow, which is the standard rate.
On the other hand, with models such as the Cosmo 63175S 30-in Wall Mount Range Hood, you get 760 cu.ft. per minute air flow, and with the Cavaliere 30" Range Hood and the Chef Range Hood WM-639, you get 900 cu.ft. per minute air flow, which is the maximum amount.
The more cubic feet per minute air flow or CFM, the quicker your range hood can suck in unwanted smoke, steam and heat, and keep your kitchen smelling fresh and clean.
Noise level might differ between range hoods, as well. You'll undoubtedly want an appliance that makes the least amount of noise when operating, since you'll be using your range hood all through the time you'll be cooking.
Most range hoods operate under 65 decibels, even when operating at the highest level, such as the Cosmo 63175S 30-in Wall Mount Range Hood, the Winflo New 30" Convertible Wall Mount and the AKDY Wall Mount Range Hood. The Cavaliere 30" Range Hood, on the other hand, can go up to 68 decibels at the highest speed level.
Most range hoods have removable filters - usually made from aluminum mesh - that you can take apart very easily to wash. Washing these filters regularly will make sure your range hood works properly for a long time; it doesn't take much to take these filters apart from the hood and clean them. Most of them are also dishwasher safe, so you won't even have to dirty your hands.
As your kitchen range hood suck in steam and smoke, grease can accumulate in the filters and block the air passages. Regular cleaning will keep the filters clean and the air passages clear for taking the smoke and steam out of the house.
Besides, removable and washable filters means that you won't have to change or replace the filters in your kitchen range hood even once, if you can just keep them clean.
There are some other important, although not essential, features that may or may not be in the kitchen range hood you've selected, i.e.
Almost all the range hoods available has the same features, the same size and fittings, and works on the same mechanism. Their prices may vary based on the brand name and quality of the product, but you'll doubtless need one of these range hoods in your kitchen.
With use, your kitchen range hood will be accumulating a huge amount of grease and stains, from all the different kinds of smoke, steam and heat.
Over time, the slightest of grease and oil stain can grow to completely block the air passage of your kitchen hood, and damage it beyond repair. Not taking care of your range hood is the worst thing you can do with the hood in your hood.
The best, and the foremost way, to take care of your range hood is to clean it properly. This includes cleaning it in a few steps, part by part, as well as an overall cleaning regime. Here are the correct and the best ways to clean your kitchen range hood.
Step#1
The exterior of the range hood needs to be wiped clean as many times as you can, preferably after each cooking session. Every time you cook, the range hood is going to suck in a large amount of steam and grease into it, some of which will linger on the bottom of the range and especially the filters.
If you can give the exterior part of the range hood with a towel, a tissue or a piece of cloth, it will wipe the extra grease and the condensed steam off the body, cleaning it for the moment. Less grease and smoke will be able to accumulate for you to clean it vigorously later.
The exterior of the range hood should be quite easy to clean as it is supposed to be within your reach. Keep a dish rag or towel close so that you can give your range hood a good and quick wipe after each cooking session, or anytime you feel the need.
Step#2
A few times a week, use a cleaning agent to spray on the exterior of your range hood. Wipe it clean with a damp (not dripping wet) piece of cloth or towel, immediately or after a few seconds, as per the instructions of the cleaning agent you are using.
The kind of cleaning agent you need depends on the material of the kitchen range hood you have in your home. Since most of the household range hoods are made from stainless steel, you need to use slightly warm soapy water. You can use any mild detergent soap or dish-washing soap mixed with warm water in a spray bottle, made at home.
For plastic or vinyl range hoods, both warm soapy water or an all-purpose store-bought cleaning agent would do. For the glass portion of the range hood, you can use the same soap-mixed water. For a copper range hood, you need proper copper cleaner.
Step#3
After giving your range hood a wipe with a damp cloth, you need to dry it with another piece of cloth. Don't leave your range hood exterior wet and damp. Use a clean dry cloth, preferably a microfiber cloth, to give it another wipe.
Step#4
The most important part of your range hood to clean are the filters. With most models and brands, these filters are made of aluminum or stainless steel mesh and can be removed very easily.
These filters are usually attached with a fastener that can be turned around, a latch that has to be pressed and lifted, rim supports or screws that you need a screwdriver for. Most of the time, they are attached with a fastener or a latch, and can be removed within a few seconds.
Whether your range has one filter or two, they need to be cleaned thoroughly at least once every month, twice if you deep fry a lot of food that can cause a lot of grease accumulation.
However, if your range hood has a charcoal or a fabric filter instead of a more solid stainless steel or aluminum one, you need to replace them every now and then. Charcoal and fabric filters cannot be properly cleaned, no matter how much you try. They have to be replaced when absolutely dirty.
Step#5
You can use your sink (if you have a large one), your bathtub or a large tub to wash your filters. Whatever vessel or medium you use, you need to make sure it can sustain hot to warm water for some time.
Fill the sink/tub/bathtub with moderately warm water, and add the recommended amount of cleaning agent to it. You are going to need something stronger if there is too much grease accumulated on the filters. Soap and water isn't going to work when you are dealing with grease and oil.
Look for suggestions of the kind of cleaning agent you can use for filters in the instruction manual that comes with your range hood, and use the recommended amount. Keep your filters immersed in the liquid for around 10 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the amount of grease you are dealing with or the type of cleaning agent you are using.
For a more natural approach, you can also use baking soda mixed with water. Baking soda can work wonders with grease, and is more natural than store-bought chemical cleaning agents.
Step#6
After a while, pick the filters up, one after another, and wash it a few times in the same water until all the loose grease and oil has fallen off the filters. Use a brush with strong bristles to forcefully scrub the filters to take out any grease that may still stick to the filters.
When all the grease seems to be loose, wash the filters under running water. The stronger the force of the water, the better it is. You can even use your sink's faucet sprayer to forcefully clean the grease and cleaning agent off.
Step#7
Place the filters on a clean surface, preferably a towel or a clothes drying rack, under the sun or in an airy place, so it can dry naturally.
Step#8
Some filters are suitable for dishwashers. If this is true for your model and brand, you can simply put the filters into your dishwasher and pour in the recommended amount of cleaning agent.
Since you'll need a cleaning agent (or baking soda mixed water) to degrease the filters, it is better not to clean your filters with your other dishes. Use your dishwasher to clean the filters at one time, nothing else.
Step#9
When your filters are clean, you need to clean inside the range hood before installing the filters back on. This can be a little tricky the first few times.
The first step would be to heat up a large pot of water, without any lid, directly under the open range hood. When the water comes to a boil, the steam will directly go inside the vent. Keep the water boiling, completely uncovered for about an hour until the water finally evaporates.
The steam will automatically cause the hardened grease and crud inside the range hood to gradually come loose. Remove the water pot and wait for the stove to cool down a little.
Step#10
Use a piece of cloth to wipe the insides of the range hood. You have to be careful because it may be hot inside from the steam; always wear protective gloves on your hand, and keep the surface underneath the range hood empty. Chunks of grease, crud and dirt may fall on the stove top, loosened by the steam, and you won't want them to fall on your food.
Wiping with a piece of cloth after steaming will take care of most of the accumulated grease inside. If your fingers still feel sticky inside the range hood, you need to use a cleaning agent.
Step#11
Any cleaning agent that helps in degreasing, will be fine for this job, as long as it is suitable for stainless steel. Use a sprayer to spray the recommended amount of cleaning agent on the inside walls of your range hood, keeping all your food and your edibles away. You might even want to wear a mask or keep your nose and mouth covered while using these cleaning agents.
Step#12
Take a piece of cloth and give the insides of the range hood a good wipe, as far as your arms can reach. You can do this immediately after spraying the cleaning agent or wait a few seconds, as per the instructions of the cleaning agent you are using. You can also use a sponge or paper towels to clean the insides.
Step#13
If you've used a chemical cleaning agent inside the range hood, give it another wipe with a clean, damp piece of cloth. This will clean the insides of the hood of any chemical residue from the cleaning agent.
Step#14
When the insides have dried, bring the filters back to the range hood. Click it back, fasten it or screw it back securely to the range hood.
This whole process should be repeated at least once a month, twice if you cook regularly, continuously and multiple times every day. The more you use your range hood and stove, the more frequent you have to clean it.
A. Apart from models and brands, you can find a few different types of best wall mount range hoods, for example:
A. Stainless steel range hoods are the most common and popular ones, and they are available from all brands and models. Stainless steel is tolerant of excessive amount of heat; they won't be damaged even when you cook regularly and for a long time.
Besides, stainless steel is easy to clean with any store-bought cleaning agent, baking soda mixed with water or warm soapy water.
A. There are two ways that you can install your range hoods on your wall, vertically or through the ceiling, or horizontally, i.e. through the wall. The best way to install them is through a vent in the ceiling, but this might not always be possible.
If you have another storey over your house, you might have to install the range hood through your wall.
A. The exterior of your range hood should be given a good wipe as frequently as you can, and the filters should be removed and washed at least once a month.
The interiors of your hood should also be cleaned properly once a month, as often as you take off the filters to wash them. Of course, if you cook regularly and for a long time, you might need to clean the filters and the interiors at least twice a month.
A. For regular household cooking, a maximum air pressure up to 475 CFM will be sufficient. Most range hoods come with 343 CFM which is adequate, but if you want more, some range hoods come with more than 700 CFM or 900 CFM air pressure. These are wall mount range hoods more suitable to commercial kitchens.
A. The recommended height of any wall mount range hood is 28" above the surface where you cook. If for any other reason, you want the range hood to be higher, it shouldn't pass a difference of 31" from the cooking surface. Any higher and your range hood cannot effectively suck in all the steam, smoke and smell from your cooking.

Every house you visit, you can see a hood covering their cooking range. There's good reason for this. Without a kitchen hood, your entire house can be filled with smoke and heat whenever you are cooking, especially if you have an open floor plan.
But when you use a range hood directly over your cooking stove, your entire home stays smoke-free and odorless.
The choice is yours!

Sometimes he wonders if a day truly starts only after the first sip of beer for the day. Enough talk about Josh and his passion; that’s the reason for this beer blog and related items. Feel free to hit on him. Start with something like: “hey beer head!” You got the idea!
