I’m not really a morning person, are you? Now that the cold weather is here, I lay in the dark for a few minutes after the alarm has gone off, listening to the silence in the house and the blustery sounds outside. It sounds cold and crisp and windy. Often I can hear the rhythmic scrape of a shovel, as a neighbor clears their driveway or sidewalks outside. Please, please do mine, I silently pray. Some mornings I have to do a lot of convincing to make myself get up and going. This Creamy Spiced Oatmeal with Dates is the ultimate comfort breakfast, and usually motivates me to get up and start the day!
Homemade oats are so easy to whip up in the morning, because they really are so fast. Even though sometimes I do like the convenience of preparing oats ahead of time, to grab and go for work, there really is nothing like a steaming pot of oatmeal for breakfast. It literally is a stick to your ribs kind of meal, full of soluble fiber that keeps you feeling fuller longer. It’s also been proven to lower cholesterol which is linked to decreasing your risk for heart disease.
Pretty good stuff for a bowl of mush huh?
But a bowl of mush doesn’t have to be boring! Homemade oats can be enjoyed in so many ways. Here, creamy oats with the addition of some comforting spices and softened dates blends together perfectly. Dates are my current obsession (have you tried this date recipe or this one yet?) and a natural sweetener that’s also loaded with fibre. I think people tend to worry that dates are high in sugar, but they’re actually a low-glycemic index food, that won’t spike blood sugar levels after eating.
And you guys thought I just ate cake for breakfast.
Well, for now, since covering my head with the duvet and waiting until spring arrives isn’t an option, I’ll just keep on motivating myself with comfort food. Warm oatmeal is like a hug in the morning. And who wouldn’t want to start their day with that?
Happy weekend friends,
