When I was invited to join the “build a better smoothie” campaign with Silk® and Vega One™ , I was pretty pumped. First, I enjoy sharing products that I love using with you and I’m all about creating quality recipes with great ingredients.
Second, guys, this is already 100% me. I didn’t even need to wait for samples to come in the mail because I use this stuff literally. Every. Day.
For a few years now I have been plagued with skin issues. Very sore and infected skin was seriously getting me down and I had to make some dietary changes to start figuring out the problem. I started eliminating things from my diet to see what worked, and for me, dairy milk was one of them. I still use dairy in most of my baked goods and my family still drinks milk (pssst! I actually live in the Dairy Capital of Canada, so we do love our milk here), but I drink Silk® Almond Milk almost exclusively. It has just as much calcium as regular milk, is a source of Vitamin D and tastes great! For this gal, it was a life saver and a real help with my move towards a more plant-based lifestyle and reducing some of my skin issues.
Using Vega One™ each day was just a natural fit for me when all of this began too. Because even though my friend says, “never trust a skinny baker,” I was beginning to look like I had a pretty good sized donut around my waistline. I needed to be on a whole new eating regime and taking better care of myself. Don’t kid yourself, this doesn’t mean that on any given day I won’t snarf down a giant piece of cake. Or five cookies. Because I will.
Since each Vega scoop is full of organic broccoli, organic kale, and organic spirulina among other great things, I don’t have to worry about adding all of those extra ingredients to my blending cup. As I was typing this up, I was thinking of the simplicity of that. We’ve all been down that smoothie road. When someone used to ask what was in my smoothie, the list was 12 ingredients long. I would cram as many vegetables, frozen fruits and seeds as possible into my Bullet cup. Now, I have this Almond Cashew Smoothie every morning. I add one giant scoop to my almond milk with some dates and almond cashew butter and I’m good to go.
Friends, I believe so much in starting the day off with some good brain food, that last year I made a huge blender full of smoothies for my class, with these amazing plant-based proteins, every single morning. We left the pitcher of smoothie goodness on our classroom table with a stack of cups, and any student could enter in the morning and fill a glass, no questions asked. And we saw the results of that. We had a class of happy students, with full bellies who were ready to tackle the day. And our dirty little secret was that they were getting 20gr of protein, vitamins and minerals and 6 servings of vegetables and didn’t even know it.
I must be throwing you off here. Blowing your mind with all this plant-based talk. Are you completely surprised that this mind thinks about things other than cake?! Yep, it’s true. Even though I think frosting should have a place in Canada’s Food Guide, I’m thrilled to be doing things to take better care of my body.

Almond Cashew Smoothie
*yield one smoothie
- 1 cup Silk ® Almond Milk (Cashew Milk is yum too!)
- 1 scoop Vega One™ French Vanilla Nutritional Shake
- 1 heaping scoop of almond cashew butter
- 2-3 medjool dates, pitted
- 1/4 – 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 3-5 ice cubes
- Place all ingredients in a blender or bullet and blend until smooth. Drink immediately. Tackle the day.
